  • Water-Year Summary reports summarize a year of hydrologic data in a printer-friendly format.
  • For water years 2014 onward, choose a water year and parameter and an on-demand Water-Year Summary report will be generated.
  • For water years 2006 through 2013, choose a water year and an Annual Water Data Report will be provided.
  • For water years 2005 and earlier, Annual Water Data Reports may be available in digital format.
  • Not all sites have reports available for every water year.

LOCATION - Lat 40°03'16", long 76°31'52" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Lancaster County, PA, Hydrologic Unit 02050306, on left bank 420 ft upstream from Chiques Creek, and 1.0 mi downstream from Marietta. A water-quality probe was installed downstream of the streamflow gage. The location is immediately above the Rte. 462 bridge attached to one of the abandoned piers in the center of the river. The location is lat 40 01' 41.87" long 076 31' 13.36".
DRAINAGE AREA - 25,990 mi². approximately, includes Chiques Creek.
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 781: 1933(M). WSP 1502: 1937.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1931 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 200.56 ft above National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929. Satellite and landline telemetry at station.
COOPERATION - Station established and maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey. Funding for the operation of this station is provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Brookfield Renewable Energy Group, and the U. S. Geological Survey.
REMARKS - Records include flow of Chiques Creek. Flow slightly regulated by 16 flood-control reservoirs which have a combined capacity of 1,599,000 acre-ft. Some noticeable diurnal fluctuation below 8,000 ft³/s caused by hydroelectric plant 9.7 mi upstream. Records for water years 2014-2016 are rated good, except those for estimated daily discharges, which are fair. Records for water years 2017-2023 are rated good, except estimated discharge, which is fair.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood of Jun 2, 1889, reached a stage of 58.2 ft, from floodmark, discharge, about 630,000 ft³/s.
WATER-QUALITY RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - May 4, 2015 to July 23, 2018. Seasonal, no winter monitoring.
PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD - May 5, 2015 to July 23, 2018.
COOPERATION - Funding for the operation of this station is provided by Exelon Corporation and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The Holtwood Hydroelectric Dam is operated by Talen Energy.
INSTRUMENTATION - YSI EXO multiparameter probe internally logging turbidity, specific conductance, and water temperature at 15-min interval. Data are not transmitted; data are retrieved every 6-8 weeks.
REMARKS - Records for water year 2015 have water temperature and turbidity rated poor and specific conductance record rated good. Records for water year 2016 have water temperature and specific conductance rated good and turbidity rated poor. Records for water year 2017 have water temperature and specific conductance rated good and turbidity rated poor.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD - SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE: Maximum, 445 microsiemens/cm, Sep 30, 2015; minimum, 145 microsiemens/cm, Jul 7, 2015. WATER TEMPERATURE: Maximum, 32.5°C, Jul 27, 2016; minimum, 5.0°C, Dec 8, 2015. Turbidity: Maximum, 562 NTU, Jul 28, 2017; minimum 0.0 NTU, many occassions.
