LOCATION - Lat 42°28'10.5", long 73°11'50.4" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Berkshire County, MA, Hydrologic Unit 01100005, on right bank 250 ft downstream from Hubbard Avenue Bridge at Coltsville, 1.2 mi upstream from Unkamet Brook, and 2 mi northeast of Pittsfield. Prior to Nov. 8, 1994, at site 200 ft upstream.
DRAINAGE AREA - 57.6 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 851: 1936(M). WDR MA-RI-82-1: 1976-77, 1979-80. WDR MA-RI-84-1: Drainage area.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - Discharge: March 1936 to current year. Prior to October 1945, published as Housatonic River at Coltsville. Water-quality records: Water years 1963-65.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder with satellite telemeter and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 993.49 ft above NGVD of 1929 and 992.95 ft above NAVD of 1988. Prior to Nov. 8, 1994, at site 200 ft upstream at same datum.
COOPERATION - Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, Office of Water Resources.
REMARKS -

Flow regulated by powerplants upstream and, since 1949, by Cleveland Brook Reservoir for municipal water supply of Pittsfield, usable capacity, 214,000,000 ft³, 5.4 mi upstream; regulation greater prior to 1955.

Water Years 2017-22: Records good except those for estimated daily discharges, which are poor.

  • WY2016: No estimated daily discharges. Records good, except for flows above 246 ft³/s, which are fair.
  • WY2015: Records good, except for flows above 320 ft³/s, which are fair, and periods of ice effect, Dec. 30 to Jan. 3, Jan. 6-17, and Jan. 27 to Feb. 20, which are poor.
  • WY2014: Records good, except those for estimated daily discharge, which are poor.

  • Note: The historical peak flow of 6,410 ft³/s on Aug. 28, 2011 is based on a rating curve extended above 2,300 ft³/s on basis of computation of peak flow over dam. The historical peak stage of 10.80 ft occurred on Sept. 21, 1938 but was at a different gage location.
