LOCATION - Lat 41°47'03.98", long 72°42'29.00" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Hartford County, CT, Hydrologic Unit 01080205, on right bank 120 ft downstream from Albany Avenue bridge in Hartford, and 3 mi upstream from confluence with South Branch.
DRAINAGE AREA - 26.8 mi².

SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - November 1936 through September 1986; April 8, 2014 to current year, operated as a continuous discharge record station. August 2010 to April 7, 2014, operated as a stage-only station. Water years 1989 through 1996, operated as a partial-record station (gage heights and discharge measurements only).
GAGE -

Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 33.36 ft above North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (34.02 ft above National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 (revised)). Prior to October 1, 1981, datum in error by +0.18 ft. Satellite telemetry at station.

REMARKS - Some regulation at small dams upstream and by storage and diversion at a Hartford water supply reservoir on headwater stream. High flow regulated by Bloomfield, Cold Spring, Wintonbury, and Blue Hills Reservoirs, on tributaries of North Branch Park River.

  • Water Years 2018-2019: Records good except those for estimated discharges, which are fair.
  • Water Year 2017: Records fair except those for estimated discharges, which are poor.
  • Water Year 2016: Records fair except those for estimated daily discharges, which are poor.
  • Water Year 2015: Records good except those for estimated daily discharges, which are poor.
  • Water Year 2014: Stage only records from 10/1/13 to 4/7/14; discharge records from 4/8/14 to 9/30/14, records good.

  • EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood of Mar. 12, 1936 reached a stage of 11.2 ft., as determined from floodmarks by city engineers of Hartford, discharge about 2,800 ft³/s.
    EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 10,000 ft³/s, Aug. 19, 1955, from rating curve extended above 1,600 ft³/s on basis of slope-area measurement of peak flow 2.6 mi. upstream; maximum gage height, 18.8 ft., Aug. 19, 1955, from flood marks. Instantaneous low flow, 0.04 ft³/s, Sep. 24, 25, 1943 and minimum daily discharge of 0.04 ft³/s, Sep. 24, 1943 were the result of regulation.
